Last February, we drove out to farmers’ fields in the rain — myself, my long-time collaborator Liv Hejenkowska from Poland, and her sister Vicky. We used real props. Real people held a grubby ladder, and we took the pictures with a 2017 DSLR.
I can utilise AI — I’m a graphic designer with years of experience. I might use some tools to select or retouch small portions of an image, but AI isn’t and never will be a photograph. It has no heart, no soul. Light hasn’t traveled through a carefully chosen lens. It will never struggle, never triumph; it is a lifeless mimicry pretending to be life.
In this field, real broccoli grew, and Liv, Vicky, and I - James - stood among it.
