Around 2010, I was commissioned by singer-songwriter Lizzie Nunnery to design her CD album cover. A "CD Cover" – what glorious days these were, an actual plush CD cover with a spine and nice paper-card stock. As mentioned in a previous photography post, the album is beautifully poetic, which you would expect nothing less from a successful playwright, Lizzie's other achievement.
The cover was a photograph of a photograph that I had taken of Lizzie on the grounds of St James' Garden at the Anglican cathedral. This image was then laid upon a piece of wood that I found in a skip and painted red. Finding the piece of wood was the most difficult part of the job; I just couldn't find the right grimy and interesting surface.
Several other photoshoots took place in some pretty dismal light, but the model was boosted by the gargantuan power of a cast-iron bodied, Bowens 500w flash and portable battery pack. I only write this to try to convey that 'once upon a time' making images was heavy work!
Here is the cover shot and the shots we never got to use.
